Standard Measurements for Passport Photos

An integral element of passports is the passport photo. The passport picture is important not just because it helps international airport officials identify the flier passenger, but because it also helps them make security adjustments as well. The passport photo is also one of the reasons why the passport is considered to be one of the valid IDs a person can present when making some transactions.

However, this everyone needs to understand – the passport photo is not just a typical ID photo, it has different requirements when it comes to the size as well as the pose and attire of the person in it, so that needs to be taken into consideration.

In some countries, where the passporting system is already fully automatic, when people apply for a passport, they get to be taken a photo via a digitized computer camera on the spot. This way, there is no longer any need for people to worry about what their passport photo size should be. But for countries where the passport pictures is still very much manual, here is a guide to help them out.

The Standard Passport Photo Dimensions

In the United States, the standard passport photo should have dimensions of exactly 2 inches by 2 inches. The face should be superimposed, and the measurement of the photo’s edge from the top of the person’s head up to the bottom of his chin should range from an inch up to 1 3/8 inches.

This photo should be the most current one has. When one says current, it means that the photo has been taken within the past half year. And, if one has just had a hair cut, then the passport pictures he is going to show the authorities should show that as well. Now, if the person would normally have to wear a wig, a veil (for nuns or Moslem women, prescription glasses, or a hearing aid, then they should put them on when taking a passport photo.

As per the attire, the requirement for U. S. passports is new normal 12 street attire. However, there are some countries that require the passport applicant to be in formal gear, or at least, to be in a shirt that has collars on it. On the other hand, when the passport applicant is a nun or a priest, who is required to wear a certain kind of attire most of the time, it is all right for him to just be shown sporting that attire.

The background should be plain white or off white, though there are some countries that require the background to be colored navy blue.
